Framing Tips for Different Art Mediums: Paintings, Prints, and More

September 12, 2023 By Dustin

When it comes to displaying artwork, the importance of a well-chosen frame cannot be overstated. The right frame not only protects the art from damage but also enhances its aesthetic appeal, drawing attention to the piece and blending it seamlessly into the surrounding decor. However, the process of framing can be a bit complex, as different art mediums require different approaches. This post will explore framing tips for various art mediums including paintings, prints, and more.

Framing Paintings

Paintings, particularly oil and acrylic pieces, often have textured surfaces that add depth and character to the work. To preserve these qualities, many artists and collectors opt for open frames, which lack a glass cover. This allows viewers to appreciate the painting’s texture and color without any interference.

When selecting an open frame, consider the artwork’s style and era. A sleek, modern frame might complement a contemporary abstract painting, while a detailed, ornate frame might be better suited for a traditional landscape or portrait. The frame’s color should also harmonize with the painting, either by matching a dominant color in the artwork or by providing a bold contrast.

Framing Prints

Unlike paintings, prints typically have flat surfaces and can be susceptible to fading or discoloration. Therefore, they are best framed under glass to provide protection. When choosing glass, consider options like UV-filtering glass, which can help prevent sun damage, and non-reflective glass, which reduces glare and allows for clear viewing.

Matting is another important consideration when framing prints. Mats serve a practical purpose by preventing the print from touching the glass, but they also provide an aesthetic benefit by creating a visual border around the artwork. When selecting a mat color, aim for something that complements the print without overpowering it. Neutral colors like white, black, or gray are often safe choices.

Framing Photographs

Photographs, like prints, should be framed under glass to protect them from damage. However, photographs can be susceptible to a phenomenon known as “silvering,” where the photo’s metallic elements reflect light and create a shimmering effect. To mitigate this, opt for high-quality, anti-reflective glass.

Matting can also enhance the presentation of a photograph. A thick, wide mat can draw attention to the image and give it a professional, gallery-like appearance. As with prints, choose a mat color that complements the photograph without competing with it.

Framing Mixed Media and Other Art Forms

For mixed media pieces, textiles, or other unique art forms, a shadow box frame can be an excellent choice. Shadow boxes have depth that allows for the display of 3D objects or artworks with pronounced textures. The frame’s depth keeps the glass from touching the artwork, protecting delicate or protruding elements.

When framing unusual or unconventional artworks, it’s crucial to consider the piece’s specific needs. Some artwork may require custom framing solutions, such as special mounting techniques or protective coverings.

Framing Memorabilia

Memorabilia, from concert tickets to sports jerseys, carry sentimental value and deserve a special place in our homes. Custom frames or shadow boxes are ideal for showcasing these items. The depth of a shadow box can accommodate the thickness of various memorabilia, protecting them while displaying their unique features. For flat items like tickets or letters, consider double-sided frames that allow viewing from both sides. When arranging multiple pieces in one frame, ensure each item has its space, preventing a cluttered look. Always use acid-free materials to avoid discoloration over time. Ultimately, framing memorabilia is about preserving memories, so choose a design that sparks joy and nostalgia.

Framing Tips

Framing is a vital aspect of art presentation that can greatly enhance the beauty and longevity of a piece. By understanding the different requirements of various art mediums, you can select the perfect frame for your artwork, whether it’s a vibrant painting, a delicate print, a stunning photograph, or an intriguing mixed-media piece. Remember, the best frame not only complements the artwork but also integrates it seamlessly into its surroundings, creating a harmonious blend of art and decor. Always take into consideration the medium of the artwork that you are seeking to frame and you will be sure to make the right choice.
