What Can Your Kids Learn at a Dance Studio? Think Beyond Ballet!

June 17, 2021 By Dustin

Either you have recognized your kid’s inherent talent and flair at dancing or you are simply looking for an after-school activity for your child. No matter the intention, a quick search for dancing studios in Miami will direct you in the right direction.

However, a list of dance studios is just the tip of the iceberg. What do you do with that information? More importantly, what can your child learn at a dance studio? You have probably only seen impressionable young girls heading to their ballet lessons, but is that the right form for your child?

We would need a separate blog to answer all of those questions, but here is our inspiring take on why a dance studio good for your child and what can they learn, once enrolled.

According to the London-based Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD), dancing is perfect for kids who are not necessarily drawn to other team sports. However, it can do wonders even for those good at all things athletic. In fact, dancing is known to improve flexibility and strength, which may athletically inclined kids to improve at their sport.

A Bouquet of Benefits

Dance helps kids exercise both their body and their mind. From imparting better posture to boosting creativity and cultural understanding, dancing offers an array of benefits, along with improving balance and flexibility. Studies have also found that dancing is a stress buster (really, who needed a study for that!) and helps alleviate depression and anxiety. For kids, particularly, dancing can bolster self-esteem and help them achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

From a career standpoint, dancing can open doors to a variety of careers, including obvious options such as dance instructor, professional dancer, and dance movement therapist. It also paves the path to careers that support the art, such as a publicist, producer, costume designer, or promoter.

Beyond Ballet

Kids find a dance form interesting when they are marveled by seeing someone else perform. For most girls keen on learning ballet, the interest develops by seeing a ballerina performing or due to cultural references such as popular movies or cartoons. However, there are some methods that a parent can employ to truly identify their child’s interest.

A good beginning to this journey would be introducing your child to as many different types of dance forms as possible, then observing which one appeals the most to them. Taking your child to a dance recital or a performance nearby is a good way to introduce them not only to dance but also to the beauty and magic of performing arts, in general. If you are ambitious, you can also take them to attend a musical!

Pursue any and every performance to see what it is that truly piques their interest and get them all groovy.

If, for some reason, this approach does not seem possible or does not elicit the desired response, look for a local dancing studio in Miami that will allow your child to drop in on different classes. You can then see for yourself as to which dance form holds your child’s attention. Many dance studios offer combo classes such as tap, jazz, and ballet—all in one—with the recital numbers utilizing parts of the same outfit in each. For instance, a leotard may come with a ballet tutu, a fringe tap skirt, and jazz pants. This approach also saves you the expense of buying three entire outfits.

To sum it up, there is an array of physical and mental benefits of enrolling your kid in a dancing studio in Miami. There is tap, jazz, and a whole lot of other dance forms that your kid can learn, widening their cultural and artistic avenues.
